Inactivity can lead to a lot of problems. If you are less active, you will have lower fitness levels and may experience weight gain, joint strain, heart disease and diabetes, muscle tightness, and fatigue. Thus, while it may seem wrong to you, it is actually very important to engage in regular physical activity when you are in pain. Here are a few guidelines to get you started:
- Always consult a physician before starting an exercise program. Also, a physiotherapist or a personal trainer with expertise in chronic pain can help you design the program that is right for you.
- Start slow, pace yourself, and follow the 10% Rule. When you have become accustomed to a certain level of activity and want to do more of it, you should only increase your activity level by about 10%. See the page in this section entitled "10% Rule."
- Find activities you enjoy. You will be more likely to stick with it.
- Exercise with a friend.
