Widespread Pain Disorders

By Lori Montgomery, MD, CCFP

Fibromyalgia is the typical condition associated with this problem, although there are other conditions that involve the same kind of "all-over" body pain. Although we know that these disorders are real, and involve physical changes in the brain and the rest of the nervous system, we don't yet know what sets this process in motion. Someday, we may find that all of these diseases are closely related - perhaps in fact that they share a common cause. Until then, we classify them based on which symptoms are most prominent.

This site describes the following widespread pain disorders:

  • Fibromyalgias
  • Myofascial Syndromes
  • Central Sensitization/Opioid-induced Hyperalgesia
